Maytag and Jenn-Air (both now owned by Whirlpool) have a problem with fires emerging within certain models of dishwashers sold between 1997 and 2001. Many colleges and universities may have installed these dishwashers in their housing units.

Campus Fire Safety Alert Pertaining to Floor Lamps by Matt Polzin — last modified 2009-02-05 09:31
This warning pertains to floor lamps that become too hot and are burning through the tulip shaped plastic shade. The condition has been reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, but no recall has been announced. Several universities have reported problems with bulbs as low as 25 watts. It is being recommended these lamps be removed from use.
